With Kira Blankenship & Matt Blankenship
Welcome to the wonders of water gardening. One of the best ways to add a relaxing retreat in your backyard – in addition to providing habitat to wildlife – is with a water garden. This can be as easy as a container pond or as extravagant as a large koi pond. In this workshop we will discuss the basics of starting and maintaining a water garden, as well as aquatic plants with a heavy emphasis on natives, fish, equipment and water quality.

About Kira Blankenship: Being raised on a small farm in Western North Carolina, Kira has always had an affinity for plants and being outdoors. Kira joined the Reems Creek Nursery Crew in May of 2020, and has worked her way up to the current Tropical, Annual, Vegetable and Aquatic Plant Coordinator. Kira graduated from the University of North Carolina at Asheville with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science. Kira is our buyer for our aquatic plant department here at Reems Creek Nursery. Kira’s love of water gardening goes back to the pond in her grandparent’s backyard she enjoyed playing in as a child.
About Matt Blankenship: As a native to WNC, Matt has a deep love for the Appalachian mountains and all the flora and fauna held within them. An avid fisherman, mushroom forager and hiker, he is familiar with many plants and animals in the area. Matt resides in our Nursery stock department here at Reems Creek Nursery, but he is also our fix-it-man who can fix just about anything! Matt frequently lends a hand in our aquatic plants department. Matt and his wife Kira built and maintain their own home pond that they have had for many years.
